Room Review: Electric Slick in Westland, December 12, 2009

The Electric Slick Charity Poker room is located inside the Electric Stick pool hall, right next to Marvaso’s Italian Restaurant.

The players at Electric Slick have some great things to say about the poker room and the folks who run it. “Very convenient bar, restaurant, pool & good food. I come here three or four nights a week. Good people here,” Kevin, one of the tournament players, let me know. During the tournament, another player told me, ” I only have one complaint about this room – all the players here play better than me!”

The tournament on Saturday night started right on time with Jay announcing for players to find their seats, quick rules review, and the cards started to fly.

Games: 4 of 5 chips

Cash games are offered here seven days a week, along with Blackjack. Three cash tables were going when the tournament wrapped up on Saturday night around midnight.

Electric Slick offers fixed limit hold’em, omaha, blackjack and sit-n-goes seven days a week.

Tournaments: 5 of 5 Chips

Paul, the poker room manager at Electric Stick, has created a specially designed tournament schedule for this location. The idea behind the tournamenst is a low buy-in, deep stack schedule. The chips you start with are the chips you have to work with. No rebuys, and only one add-on for Saturday’s tournament. Saturday is the only night with an add-on at the first break, with one caveat – you must *have* chips to do the add-on.

Seats are randomly drawn with cards at the charity table. The blinds, levels, breaks and payouts are determined by Tournament Director software projected on the big screen in the poker room. Jay, the tournament director, also announces when blinds are going up, and when breaks are coming. All players must leave the tournament tables during breaks so the dealers can chip up everyones stacks.

These are well-attended tournaments, with over 140 in Friday’s tournament, and eight full tables at Saturday’s. Very nice prize pools, and lots of great tournament play!

The last Sunday of every month, Electric Slick offeres a $150 buy-in Deep Stack tournament. November’s Deep Stack had a $10,080 prize pool and paid out $3,480 to the first place winner.

Atmosphere: 5 of 5 Chips

What a great poker atmosphere – welcoming and friendly. Geared towards the poker players.

As you walk in to the Electric Stick, you go past dart boards, video games, and beautiful pool tables on your way up to the bar. At the bar, there’s a host to let you know where to go. The poker room and pool room are separated by two fireplaces that are fired up when it’s chilly out. The poker room has just been renovated – new speed cloth on the tables, new mural on the wall (check out the video above) and fresh wallpaper. Music is in the background, with sports on the high def TV’s all around the poker room. The tables are non-smoking – smoking at the bar.

Electric Slick in connected to Marvaso’s – a five star Italian restaurant. All the menu items from Marvaso’s are available table-side. They serve free pizza for all players in the poker room during the tournament final table.

An ATM is on site, along with Keno, Pull Tabs, Pool, Darts and video games.

Equipment: 5 of 5 Chips

The Electric Slick Charity Poker room is a first class establishment. The twelve tables (fourteen on Friday nights) have been freshly re-felted, with cup holders around the rails. These are not your fold-up leg tables! They’re solid, heavy, carved leg tables. Tournament chips are custom stickered, cash chips also custom.

The poker room will be expanding even more in the coming months to accommodate even more tournament and cash game players.

Staff: 4 of 5 Chips

Paul, Jay and the Electric Slick team work really hard to make every player feel welcome in their poker room. Dealers are fast, friendly, professional and consistant. These guys are all on the same page throughout the poker room. Paul and Jay are in dress shirts and ties, the dealers are all in black polo shirts, giving a professional spin to the room.

The waitresses are also fast, friendly and beautiful – check out the slide show above!
