The Second Nuts: By Chris Ball

“When we play, we must realize, before anything else, that we are out to make money.” – David Sklansky

What a perfect quote to begin my blog here on MiPokerNuts.com. When “The Badger” first posed the idea to write a piece for the site I was apprehensive to say the least. While poker has been a huge part of my life for several years now and my primary source of income for the last 10 months, I have always considered myself a small time guy. One might compare me to “Kinish” never taking wild shots, always being the nit that warns Mikey not to put all that glimmer in play. Thousands of other players have done more, won more, accomplished more in a quarter of the time and amount of hours I’ve been grinding away in front of a computer or at the local card room. Hell, my largest live score is only equal to half the largest buy in (50k H.O.R.S.E) at the WSOP. So what qualifies me to be giving anyone advice? Well…I’m 24 years old, a recent college grad, and I get to wake up every morning without any commitments, nothing I have to do if I don’t want to do it. I’m not a wealthy person, not yet anyways, but I am fortunate enough to have the freedom to be young and stupid. I may have yet to attempt to play a “10k” but I’ve never been broke, not since day 1, not since that first 50 dollar deposit on Party Poker in 2003 as a 16 year old punk who thought he was the next Chris Moneymaker. Little did I know at the time I really wouldn’t want to be anything like him.

What I do bring to the table is an evolved in depth knowledge of the game along with thousands of hours worth of experience. I was a winner back in the day when common sense alone made you rich, and I’m a winner in the new age of online and live poker where things like tracking software, icm, and light 4-betting have become the standard. I’ve logged over 3 million online hands and thousands of live table hours in the past several years, hopefully I will be able to share some of the knowledge I’ve picked up during that time. My goal is to try and tackle the basics for both the beginner and intermediate player looking to adapt their game to the new age of poker. In the coming weeks I will attempt to tackle a number of different topics that will hopefully both entertain and help you reach the full potential of your poker ability and profitability. To steal a line from Jim Cramer, I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to make you money!!

My idea is to make this experience a learning one for anyone reading including myself. I welcome feedback and discussion of any kind. One of the most useful learning tools I’ve found is discussing situations and debating them with other players. It’s not until you step back and stand outside the problem are you really able to dissect and conquer it. I challenge anyone reading to object or share a different point of view than my own. It’s that kind of constructive criticism that helps us both become better. That being said I look forward to putting together some great rants in the coming weeks. Until then try to keep your cards straight and your head off the felt.
