Facing even more cuts in state funding, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 284 were in search of a way to help raise funds to fill the gaps and help out local veterans and families.
Penny and Judy were selling chips at the Heidelberg when I visited the poker room. "This is a really nice fundraiser - we're glad the door is open to do this type of fundraiser," Judy told me. This was the fourth and final 2009 Texas Hold'em fundraiser for the Vietnam Vets, "with many more to come."
The Vietnam Veterans 284 had a $2000 fundraising goal for this latest effort. The proceeds are going to needy children for Christmas, starting with veteran families. The Vietnam Vets spend about $125 per child, getting each one two pairs of pants, two shirts, two pairs of pajamas, socks, underwear and two toys.
They are also hoping to bring Thanksgiving dinner to the veterans in the Grand Rapids Home. Penny and Judy let me know that the state recently cut funding for the Grand Rapids Home by 27%. WIthout community support, and Texas Hold'em Fundraisers, "our veterans would be in deep trouble," according to Judy.
"We can sell poppies 'til we're blue in the face to make this much money, and to get the volunteers to do it!!!" With the low volunteer involvement, and high success rate, Texas Hold'em Fundraisers have really helped our local veterans and families.
