A chapter of Moose International, a fraternal and service organization with more than 400,000 members nationwide, the Northville Moose Lodge has many causes it aims to support. But like most charities in Michigan, the lodge has struggled to support itself during the state’s economic recession. But for the last two years, the lodge has found some financial relief in the charity poker circuit. The lodge reaped the benefits of another poker night Monday at Northville Downs.

“We have been involved in charity poker the last two years,” said Jim Cicala, a volunteer for the lodge. It’s a great fundraiser for our organization. It has really helped us survive this tough economy.”

Those who benefit from the lodge’s charitable contributions certainly appreciate charity poker, too. Among the organizations that receive financial support from the Northville Moose Lodge is MOOSEHEART, a residential childcare facility located on a 1,000-acre campus 38 miles west of Chicago. According to the organization’s Web site, “MOOSEHEART cares for youth whose families are unable, for a wide variety of reasons, to care for them. Some have lost one or both parents; others are living in environments that are simply not conducive to healthy growth and development. Whatever the reason, the men and women of the Moose, through unparalleled generosity and volunteerism, furnish the resources necessary to care for children in need..”

Another organization benefiting from the Northville Moose Lodge’s generosity is Moosehaven, a 70-acre residency that has supported thousands of retired Moose members in Northeast Florida since it was founded in 1922. According to Moosehaven’s Web site, “Moosehaven residents enjoy their beautiful community without the burdens of home maintenance. Health care is comprehensive, and transportation is readily available -- as are plenty of social interaction and activities. In fact, residents often find themselves so involved at Moosehaven, an oft-heard comment is, "We wish we'd moved here sooner!"
