Jubilee needs money, volunteers for 2009

The community interest may be there but Jackson's Hot Air Jubilee still needs dedicated volunteers to get next year's event off the ground, organizers said.

Jubilee committee members met Tuesday night to discuss attracting volunteers and sponsors and fundraising efforts.

Construction under way on FireKeepers Casino near Battle Creek

EMMETT TOWNSHIP -- Rising like a massive steel skeleton in a former cornfield east of Battle Creek, construction of the FireKeepers Casino is well under way.

Work began on the $300 million, 236,000-square-foot casino in May and it is scheduled to open next summer.

Hamrick, an East Lansing resident who finished 10th in the World Series of Poker main event, played regularly in a weekly poker game I played in three years ago.

First weekend of gaming is slow but profitable for Fireworks Festival

The first weekend of play wrapped up Sunday at the new Big House Sports Bar & Poker Room with organizers citing a somewhat slow start to the new charitable gaming operation.

Despite smaller profits than expected, organizers said they were pleased that hundreds ventured into 510 E. Midland St. to check out the new mini-casino and its Las Vegas-style atmosphere.

It's getting easier to play poker for a good cause in Jackson.

A card room run by Charity Poker Solutions opens today at Hot Rods, 1715 W. Michigan Ave.

Charity Poker Solutions, owned by Patrick O'Dowd, Jason Fuller and Tomas Cobb, plans to host Texas hold 'em tournaments four days a week on behalf of charities and nonprofit organizations.

There's a new casino room opening in Bay City, and it's all for a good cause.

Owners of the Big House Sports Bar, 510 E. Midland St., were busy this past weekend transforming their establishment into a Las Vegas-style gaming room - complete with 12 poker tables, two blackjack tables, a roulette table and a brand-new name.

Shooters delays opening of legal gambling room

Poker players will have to wait a bit longer to go gambling at Shooters.

The charity lined up to benefit first from the card playing is still awaiting licensing approval from the Michigan Lottery Charitable Gaming Division in Lansing, said Shoun P. Walle, manager of the club and bar at Shooters, 8845 Gratiot in Thomas Township.

Most of the furloughed employees work on table games, and 70 are part-time employees, said Greektown Casino spokesman Roger Martin.
